Southeast Yonkers

Yonkers is one of the cities located in Westchester County, New York, United States. The city was developed in the vicinity of the Hudson River. It is the third most populous municipality in New York, after New York City and Buffalo. The city’s population in Yonkers, New York was 211,569, as reported in the Census of 2020 United States Census. Yonkers is classified as an inside suburban area in New York City, located just in the middle of the Bronx and around 2 millimeters (3 kilometers) from Marble Hill in Manhattan, the northernmost point of Manhattan.

Yonkers’s downtown area is located around the plaza called Getty Square, where the municipal government is situated. Downtown is also home to important local businesses as well as non-profit organizations. It is an important retail area that serves Yonkers and the northern Bronx. Yonkers is home to many places of interest, including an access point to the Hudson River, Tibbetts Brook Park, which has a public pool with slides and a lazy river, and a two-mile walking circuit Untermyer Park; Hudson River Museum; Saw Mill River daylighting, in which parking lots were removed to reveal an area of the Nepperkamack (Saw Mill River); Science Barge; and Sherwood House. Yonkers Raceway, a harness racing track, has renovated its clubhouse and grounds, added gaming machines in 2006, and became the city’s first “racino” named Empire City. In recent times, Yonkers has undergone progressive urbanization.

The major shopping centers are Getty Square, located on South Broadway at the Cross County Shopping Center, and Westchester’s Ridge Hill, along Central Park Avenue, often referred to as “Central Ave” by area residents. It is officially just a few miles further north of White Plains. The name is also known as Yonkers of “The City of Seven Hills,” comprising Park, Nodine, Ridge, Cross, Locust, Glen, and Church Hills.
